About Us

Our history

The National Association of Health Stores was founded in 1931 to represent the growing number of independent health stores in the UK. Today, as Health Stores UK, it is the only organisation in the UK dedicated to supporting and championing independent natural products retailers. It is run entirely by independent retailers.

Health Stores UK actively works to promote the many benefits of shopping in locally owned, independent health stores – both to local communities and economies. We also strive to ensure that consumers who shop in our Members’ stores experience the highest standards of customer service and advice.

Health Stores UK also works closely with other industry bodies, such as the Health Food Manufacturers Association (HFMA) to ensure the maximum possible availability of high quality health food and nutritional products. When necessary, the Association will consider legal recourse to protect consumer rights and the livelihoods of Members, for example the Judicial Reviews it brought over the regulation of the herbal remedy Kava Kava and the European Food Supplements Directive.

Health Stores UK is completely committed to driving forward the specialist UK health food trade, highlighting to consumers its multiple benefits – broadest products range, high quality advice and independence – over supermarket and internet competitors.

We firmly believe that the best place to buy organic and natural products is from your local health store, from people who live and breath these products, and who are well trained and personally motivated to help their customers. Looking for the Health Stores UK logo on the door is an effective way to ensure those values are fully met.

Mission statement

To promote and protect the interests of the specialist health food store and to encourage the proliferation of health food stores and their aim to improve the health of the nation.

Health Stores UK is completely committed to driving forward the UK health food trade in spite of increasing competition from supermarkets and the internet. Health Stores UK firmly believes that the best place to buy organic and natural products is from your local health store, from people who live and breathe these products and who are well trained. Looking for the Health Stores UK logo on the door will be a good start to guaranteeing this.

Please feel free to contact us or use the store finder to find your local health store.

I am a qualified nutritionist with a masters degree in complementary health studies from Exeter University. I’ve worked in the health food industry for over 30 years; as part of my family business Beanfreaks Health Food Stores, my extensive product knowledge, means I’m most happiest front of house, helping and advising customers.

I’ve also worked as a nutritionist trainer for Quest Vitamins, and written many health articles over the years. I am looking forward to celebrating 100 years of the NAHS, I hope to share my knowledge, and experiences, and think of what NAHS membership means to our industry, and how we can shape and mould the futureof the Health Food Industry for the next 100 years.
